Welcome!
The Fiorello H. LaGuardia Foundation (LGF) is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization based in New York City whose mission is to continue the legacy of Mayor LaGuardia as an international humanitarian. Mayor Fiorello H. LaGuardia, while Director General of the UN Relief and Rehabilitation Administration (UNRRA), enunciated his “One World” philosophy (1946). He believed that recipients of food and reconstruction assistance should be selected on the basis of need and not by political ideology. Long an advocate of international cooperation and the provision of economic assistance to emerging nations, UNRRA provided the ideal mechanism to put his beliefs into practice. LGF strives to perpetuate LaGuardia’s vision for one world through programs that foster:
• Community-based development and South-to-South technology transfer
• Sustainable agriculture and improved access to water
• Renewable energy infrastructure
• Health, education and academic exchange
Founded in 2001, the LGF has promoted international partnerships to support sustainable development through technology transfer, principally in rural areas of northeast Brazil, sub-Saharan Africa, India and China. LGF’s primary focus is on development and support of sustainable project models, in particular, on their financing, recognizing that projects that are not financially viable will not deliver long-term development, environmental, or social benefits. LGF’s principals have more than 50 combined years of experience in economic development assistance in the World Bank, US Export Import Bank, International Fund for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency, in state and local government, and with a variety of non-governmental organizations and foundations, including The Rockefeller Foundation.
LGF has executed projects in Mozambique, China, India, and Brazil. We operate with local partners in local economies and believe in the power of market mechanisms to promote environmentally and socially sustainable economic development.
