INFRASTRUCTURE As three-term mayor of New York, LaGuardia was perhaps the greatest infrastructure builder in the history of the United States, making New York the international metropolis it is today. A traveler to New York City lands at an airport, enters Manhattan by bridge or tunnel, and descends the island on a highway – each part of LaGuardia’s legacy. The LaGuardia Foundation brings modern, sustainable infrastructures to rural communities in Brazil, China, and India.
EMPOWERMENT Perhaps the only activity on which LaGuardia spent more time than infrastructure building was on defending the "little guy" from the "high and mighty." He was a tireless champion of the poor, the disenfranchised, and immigrants. Today, the LaGuardia Foundation works to create opportunity for communities untouched by conventional social and economic development programs.
ONE WORLD LaGuardia’s life-long international experience - the consular service, translating at Ellis Island, major in the Army Air Corps in Italy, and UNRRA director – provided the basis for his One World philosophy. He argued the necessity of international cooperation to help less developed nations, not only for their sakes, but in our own interest. The LaGuardia Foundation mobilizes resources - human, financial, and institutional - to give the less fortunate in other countries the opportunity to construct secure and dignified lives. By so doing, the LaGuardia Foundation aspires to create “One World.”
